Design process of patient-specific osteosynthesis plates using topology optimization

Abstract To reduce complications related to the osteosynthesis plating system, use of a patient-specific plate design was proposed. However, issue associated is still critical. Because existing designs have mainly relied on parametric studies, method needed that considers complex factors influencing performance reconstruction and can be generalized for various patients. The goal this study propose process strengthen advantages customized patient discomfort ensure stability surgery. We applied topology optimization case mandibular condyle fracture. problem set maximize stiffness minimize its volume. designed evaluated using finite element simulations, which approximated mastication states. Plate then compared with two conventional systems: bent plates computerized numerical control-machined plates. models used pair mini-plates, modeled by conducting bending simulation. Each model appraised via masticatory simulations under static molar-jaw-closing conditions. Differences in stress concentration were noted between most severe occurred plate, affected residual from process. In comparison plates, newly exhibited significantly improved biomechanical terms had approximately twice endurance capability against fractured bone separation. balance volume stiffness, it showed superior over proposed an effective not only because enhances but also cases.
